Ridge Augmentation
What is a ridge augmentation?
A ridge augmentation is a common dental procedure often performed following a tooth extraction. This procedure helps recreate the natural contour of the gums and jaw that may have been lost due to bone loss from a tooth extraction, or for another reason.
The alveolar ridge of the jaw is the bone that surrounds the roots of teeth. When a tooth is removed an empty socket is left in the alveolar ridge bone. Usually this empty socket will heal on its own, filling with bone and tissue. Sometimes when a tooth is removed the bone surrounding the socket breaks and is unable to heal on its own. The previous height and width of the socket will continue to deteriorate.
Rebuilding the original height and width of the alveolar ridge is not always medically necessary, but may be required for dental implant placement or for aesthetic purposes. Dental implants require bone to support their structure and a ridge augmentation can help rebuild this bone to accommodate the implant.
How is a ridge augmentation accomplished?
A ridge augmentation is accomplished by placing bone graft material in the tooth socket. It is often done immediately after the tooth is removed to avoid the need for a second procedure later. Next, the gum tissue is placed over the socket and secured with sutures. Dr. Portnof, Dr. Gebrael or Dr. Gianatasio may choose to use a space-maintaining product over the top of the graft to facilitate new bone growth. Once the socket has healed, the alveolar ridge can be prepared for dental implant placement.
A ridge augmentation procedure is typically performed in Drs. Portnof, Gebrael and Gianatasio’s office under local anesthesia. Some patients may also request sedative medication.

Doctor P has an excellent team that actually cares about their patients! I had a broken jaw and had to go in for surgery! Because of this Covid stuff going on I couldn’t have any friends or family at the hospital. Dr. P made me feel so comfortable going into surgery it was a relief! I had my wisdom teeth taken out this past February and the doctor and staff were great and were very kind to me. I took my Husband for a tooth Extraction, and him being a stroke patient the help from the staff was God sent. The receptionist at the front Ms. Nardia was so great with us. When we went on the inside there I met the rest of the staff. Ms. Danita, the care of heart she had helping me transferring my husband from the wheelchair unto the dentist chair. How she explained the procedure to him, to him making sure he understood everything, which was done very slowly and with great compassion knowing his health condition. And then here comes Dr. Jason Portnof, could this get any better of course. The procedure was done before I knew it. They made sure his script was sent over to the pharmacy, which was giving a little trouble but they went above and beyond to make sure it went through before we left. Great team, clean environment.
